Introduction

When embarking on this effort to compile a coherent annotated bibliography on the topic of Latinx LGBTQ families, I knew there had to be a wide sweep of topics covered. Latinx, LGBTQ, and families are all completely separate entities not often combined in either everyday life or the world of academia, forcing me to pull from a variety of sources to form a coherent body of research. In addition, I sought to combine a network of different viewpoints and approaches to an undeniably multifaceted topic. With this goal in mind, I annotated seven sources, one recording an LGBTQ history of Mexico, one exploring homosexuality across world cultures, two regarding how to best serve LGBTQ students and families in an academic and a clinical setting, respectively, one calling for change in the United States’ treatment of undocumented LGBTQ peoples, one biographing the life of a Latinx transgender icon and her role in the queer movement, and finally a novel where the voices of the children of LGBTQ families tell their stories. An overarching commonality across all of the above articles are their deep connections to LGBTQ history and culture. Each shares the intention of both normalizing and providing information on an aspect of LGBTQ existence. However, each source serves a different purpose in the context of my research. Each week one of these sources will be summarized and analyzed, in order to weave a nuanced and in-depth image of this delicate intersection of identities. I encourage each of you to not only take my findings at face value but read each article for yourself, I will be attaching links when possible. At the end of these nine weeks, we will reconvene and explore the special role each piece plays in a bigger picture of Latinx LGBTQ Families.
